Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Review

We have updated our Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra review in February 2024. I used a Samsung review sample as my primary smartphone during my test period. The score and viewpoint have remained the same since the first review. However, several areas have been adjusted after using the phone more. I will utilize my Galaxy S24 Ultra, bought straight from Samsung, and update the review with new information after the review model is returned.

Key Features of Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Design of Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

The Galaxy S24 Ultra looks identical to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, Samsung has made it more durable, easier to use, and modern. It didn’t get a significant overhaul, but the changes are more than fresh lines and a camera appearance. Titanium replaces the S23 Ultra’s Armor Aluminum frame, making it warmer, scratch-resistant, and more beautiful. It feels more comfortable in your palm due to the grippier titanium and less curved sides. The flat screen and minimal bottom bezel make the huge screen look even more significant. This smartphone is big.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra camera

Like the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a 200-megapixel essential camera, a 12MP wide-point camera, and a 10MP fax camera with 3x optical zoom. The new 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom is the biggest hardware update, and 10x zoom photos are optical quality. Samsung’s ProVisual Engine, Super HDR, and Galaxy AI editing features enhance pictures during and after shooting.

Our separate test compares the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s telephoto cameras to the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s, but rest assured that the Galaxy S24 Ultra takes better, more colorful, and more visually accurate photos than its predecessor. Despite the name, it’s an enhancement.

The new AI-assisted auto slow-motion mode, where you touch and hold on to a normal-speed video and the S24 Ultra slows it down and fills in the missing frames, is more successful. The footage is sluggish when busy; otherwise, you’d never know it wasn’t shot in slow motion. You can also edit the video to slow down at specific points to make a styled film. Very good.

The camera has UHD recording with all zoom ranges, 8K at 30 fps, and 120fps UHD slow motion video. Over the next week, I’ll test the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s photography and battery life. The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s camera is versatile, with robust AI features and upgraded 3x and 5x telephoto sensors. The 10x zoom is more significant than expected, completing the S24 Ultra’s photography tools.

S24 Ultra: Galaxy AI

As the tech world constantly discusses it, Samsung has jumped on the AI bandwagon. Galaxy S24 Ultra offers Galaxy AI tools and features. What are they, do they function, and, most importantly, will you utilize them? The Circle to Search by Google feature is a winner, taking everything functional about Google Lens and adding a simple motion to serve as a visual search tool for images, Instagram, and the web. The Generative Edit photographic tool, like Google’s Magic Eraser, removes distracting features, resizes or straightens images, and then uses AI to fill in the blanks. It’s excellent at this, and only the most discerning eye would notice; therefore, a glittery watermark is placed on photographs where it works.

Other than these two features, Galaxy AI tools may be used sparingly. Live Translate translates voice and text in real-time across 13 languages. At the same time, Interpreter sits between two individuals and translates typed text. The last time I used either function was the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s launch showcase. The feature’s grammar and spelling check is more practical and triggered by tapping a glittering icon above the Samsung keyboard. Samsung’s Notes app uses AI to summarize and format notes.

Galaxy AI is not a reason to buy the Galaxy S24 Ultra. However, the functions mainly operate as claimed, and a few are helpful and enjoyable, though you may use them sparingly. However, destructive features like Chat Assist make you question how much consideration went into the suite of tools and remind us that AI on phones is still a gimmick.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra battery, calls, charging.

As powerful as the Galaxy S24 Ultra is, its 5,000mAh battery can keep up. During the break-in period, a charge lasted five hours of average use without gaming, leaving 25%. That performance was good, but it’s improved since then.

A couple of charging cycles will give the Galaxy S24 Ultra nearly five hours of screen time and 50% battery life after gaming, applications, video streaming, and calls. After a week of use, the S24 Ultra’s battery performed well. It finishes the day with 75% even with full QHD screen resolution and two hours of screen time.

The box doesn’t include a charger, and a 45W adaptor is needed for fast wired charging. I charged the battery in 70 minutes with the Samsung-compatible Anker 313 GaN charger and cable. It’s okay, but the OnePlus 12 is faster. A charger that doesn’t support the S24 Ultra’s quickest speed will take 90 minutes to charge. Galaxy S24 Ultra enables wireless and reverse charging.

Great calls and connectivity—the S24 Ultra is one of the best-sounding and most reliable cell phones I’ve used. The speaker is straightforward to position near your ear. Quality has been refined even in low-signal places without Wi-Fi calling. The Galaxy S24 Ultra connects to my home Wi-Fi and 4G and 5G networks when traveling. Though it seems obvious, it’s not always so. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is fantastic for phone use.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra software, S Pen

The Galaxy S24 Ultra would undoubtedly tick off every modern smartphone feature on a list. It has Android 14 and One UI 6.1 and has been reliable. After setting the always-on screen and customizing the ring and alert tone, Samsung’s software is easy to use and master.

There’s lots of flexibility, and I enjoy the new Creative Wallpaper feature, which lets you create unique AI-generated wallpapers using phrases like “surreal tower made of amethyst in shades of indigo and blue.” The Quick Settings panel is full but organized, and tapping the lock screen notification icons lets you respond without opening the app or main screen.

An unsheathed S Pen stylus from the bottom of the phone appears to offer no new functionality over the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, the flat screen makes it easier to doodle on, and its wireless shutter release is perfect for selfies with the rear camera or group photographs without a timer.

Samsung guarantees seven years of software upgrades for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, making it one of the best-supported smartphones. The phone has so much power and can endure for years, so this long-term support will help offset its hefty price.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra price, availability

The Galaxy S24 Ultra costs $1,300 more than the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. It has 256GB of storage at this price, but you can upgrade to 512GB or 1TB. Titanium Grey, Black, Violet, and Yellow are available. Titanium, Blue, Green, and Orange are extra hues available only on Samsung’s website.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is pricey, and all other big-name, similarly-specced Android phones are cheaper. Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro, Google Pixel 8 Pro, and OnePlus 12 cost $1,199, $1,000, and $800, respectively. Only buying a big-screen foldable smartphone will increase your spending. In any case, the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s worth is undisputed since it contains every one of the elements, power, and backing you could need for quite a long time.

Samsung’s $100 cost increment on the Galaxy S24 Ultra over the Galaxy S23 Ultra is frustrating and difficult to legitimize from a customer’s point of view. Titanium, Gorilla Protection glass, and Universe simulated intelligence abilities have raised the telephone’s cost, making it one of the most expensive non-collapsing telephones and harder to sell. Is it worth more than the S23 Ultra? That’s not true, and it should be considered when upgrading from an Ultra. However, it remains a great phone that will endure for years.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra verdict

Refreshed design is not necessarily better. New features, technology, and lifestyle-enhancing changes do. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra offers almost every additional feature or specification upgrade you might want. Even if you have a Galaxy S23 Ultra, it’s worth getting if you can handle the price rise.

You don’t need to replace your Galaxy S23 Ultra (it’s still great). Galaxy AI is being pushed aggressively, and although some of it is worth your time, more is needed to choose the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Everything from the excellent battery life to the upgraded camera makes it a must-buy.

Pros and cons of Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Pros:

  • High-performance processor
  • Improved telephoto cameras
  • Flawless screen for S Pen use
  • Two-day battery life
  • Long software support
  • Durable build and materials
  • Google Circle to Search

Cons:

  • Price increase
  • Covered speakers
  • Unusable Chat Assist
  • Average charging speeds

I recommend upgrading from the Galaxy S23 Ultra to the Galaxy S24 Ultra but get it to keep it for years. Besides Samsung’s efforts to employ more recyclable materials, the software update commitment, device ability, and price rise all say, “Keep me!” I wonder if you’ll become bored with the Galaxy S24 Ultra or realize its full potential. Buy it and keep it—you can’t do better.
